About us

AI that understands children.

Lefcourt Medical AI builds explainable, pediatric-native AI that helps clinicians read children's medical images correctly. We're a Baltimore-based team of AI researchers, operators and clinicians.

FDA-cleared AI tools for pediatric chest X-ray pathology

Our story

It started with one missed diagnosis.

Lefcourt Medical AI was founded in 2022 after our founder's childhood friend was misdiagnosed with cancer at age 16. It showed how much rides on reading a child's scan correctly, and how often that read happens without a pediatric specialist.

Samuel went on to research diagnostic AI at the Johns Hopkins Radiology AI Lab and Institute for Assured Autonomy, where he focused on AI for safety-critical systems. He kept running into the same gap: AI tools were trained on adults and didn't explain their answers, yet they were being used on children.

After completing his PhD in 2026, he went full time on Lefcourt Medical AI with co-founder Yolanda Lefcourt. Together they're building PedXR, an AI second opinion that is designed for children and shows clinicians its reasoning.

Mission & vision

Why we exist

Vision

Every child's X-ray read with specialist-level confidence, wherever they're imaged.

What we believe

Four principles behind everything we build

Kids aren't small adults

Pediatric anatomy changes with age. Our models are trained on children from the start.

Show the work

If a clinician can't see why the AI flagged something, they shouldn't have to trust it.

Humans decide

AI supports clinical judgment. The final call always stays with the clinician.

Safety first

We build like a safety-critical system: auditable, validated by age group, and designed for FDA review.

Our journey

From an idea to a pediatric platform

We've grown step by step, guided by clinicians at every stage.

2022

Lefcourt Medical AI is founded

Started with one goal: reduce pediatric misdiagnoses through human–AI collaboration.

2025

Johns Hopkins Ward Infinity

Completed the 16-week healthcare venture accelerator and received a $12K award, plus $13K in AWS credits.

Customer discovery

NSF I-Corps

20+ interviews across 7 healthcare organizations, from radiologists to AI division chiefs. Clinicians told us they wanted explainability and tools built for children.

2026

Full time on PedXR

Samuel completed his PhD and went full time, and the first PedXR prototype for pediatric chest X-rays was built.
